About the Boxer Puppy

I have to laugh about little wanderer's comment on my 31 Things Meme about the boxer puppy. She's absolutely right about boxers being a handful. Someone once described them as the original party animal and I have to say I've not heard anything that fits quite so well. But there is a reason that I'm attracted to boxers.

Several years ago (I hate to say many, it makes me feel old!), I was having a really bad day.......my truck wouldn't start, my horse was very very ill and I was feeling pretty overwhelmed. I was sitting on the deck of this house where I had just used their phone to call my husband to try and get my truck started when this boxer puppy came crawling out from under that deck and up into my lap to comfort me.

Up until that time, I hadn't particularly cared for boxers. I'd had a bad experience with them as a child. In my mind they were all aggressive scary things, yet here was this puppy sensing my pain and trying to fix it for me. I have to say it was love at first sight............well, maybe first comforting. Anyway, I had to have that puppy.

It turns out that she was supposed to be sold. However, I kept bugging the owner and the person who was supposed to get the puppy didn't show up or call back so I managed to make this puppy my own. I had no clue what I was getting myself in for........and if I had, I'm sure it wouldn't have stopped me. that dog brought me more joy than I can even describe.

She was indeed the original party animal. There was nothing she loved more than harassing (in a good way) our rottweiler and getting the old dog to play, chasing horses (which was never allowed) and jumping into my lap (yes, she was way too big for a lap dog), putting her head on my shoulder and looking at me with those eyes of her in the most precocious way. She would make me laugh and then start to bark quite pleased with herself.

Her name was Jynx..........aptly named after high jinks..... definition: Playful, often noisy and rowdy activity, usually involving mischievous. That was my Jynx to a tee.

You'll notice I said "was." I lost Jynx to an auto immune disorder a few years back. It was one of the saddest days of my life and ranks right up there with the loss of my beloved grandfather and my beloved mare, Scandalous. The old rottweiler didn't take the loss well either. She too died shortly after we lost Jynx leaving an even bigger hole in my heart.

If you're wondering how this relates to the new boxer puppy. She will be a relative of my Jynx. Her mother, Dakota, looks and acts more like Jynx than any boxer I have known. I have been patiently waiting for this puppy since Dakota was only two months old. That's when her owner, Angie, promised me I could have a puppy when they bred Dakota. And that has happened and the little boxer buns are in the oven and I can hardly wait.

The timing couldn't be better. Times are tough and just the thought of that little pistol of a puppy already lightens up my life. I'll certainly post pictures, if I can ever get my camera fixed.........or find the time to get a new one. In the meantime, here's a picture of Jynx doing what she does best.........snowing mom. Yes, indeed those are my knees and Jynx was begging for permission to crawl into my lap.

Dachshunds are a handful too. They are like little nuclear bombs on legs. They can destroy a room in the time it takes a person to go to the bathroom.
One of the saddest things that ever happened for me with regards to animals is is that I had a mini lop rabbit and a guinea pig that lived together. The guinea pig considered the rabbit to be her mother. The rabbit died one day. The vet did a necropsy and said that her liver was underdeveloped, which sometimes happens in the miniature breeds. She got bigger but her liver didn't and it couldn't keep up with the demands. He says that she didn't suffer, she just went to sleep and didn't wake up.
Unfortunately the guinea pig died about two weeks later. The technical reason was cecisis (not sure if I spelled that right) but really I think it was loneliness for missing the rabbit.
Sometimes life just sucks!
